Indian Driving Licenses(RTO Information & Forms)
The RTO issues, renews and provides domestic and international licenses to citizens of India in accordance with the rules laid down by the Motor Vehicles Act of India,1988. This act states that the minimum age limit is 18 years for issuing licenses for cars or two wheelers. However an exception is made for mopeds below 50cc horsepower wherein a license may be issued to individuals with a minimum age of 16 years.

Note: All license applications need the following proofs attached.
Age Proof
The following documents constitute a valid Age Proof:
1. Birth Certificate
2. Secondary School Certificate
Any one of these documents will suffice.
Address Proof
Any one of the documents listed below is considered as a valid address proof.
1. Ration Card.
2. Passport.
3. Insurance Policy.
4. Telephone Bill.
5. Electricity Bill.
6. House Tax Bill.
7. Income Tax Certificate.
8. Lease Agreement.
9. Registration of Company.
10. Water Bill.

Attested copies (attested by a gazetted officer) of the above documents are required.
The first step in procuring a license is for the individual to apply for a learners license.

The following additional information is also required while applying for a learner's license.
1. Age Proof
2. Address Proof
3. Three latest photographs
These have to be attached with the application form.
A learners license is valid for 6 months from the date of issue and carries the date of expiry. You have to get your permanent license within these 6 months failing which your learner's license will expire.
After obtaining a learner's license, you must apply for a permanent license within the validity period. You will also have to undergo a driving test.

You also need the following documents along with your license form.
1. Original Learner's License
2. Three passport size photographs.
3. Address Proof.
4. Age Proof.
(A permanent license is valid till the age of 40 after which you have to renew the same every 5 years.)
Every license is valid for a certain amount of time. Once the license expires one has to get it renewed from the RTO.
The documents required for a renewal of license are:
1. Original License.
2. Two latest passport size photographs.
3. Form No 9.
4. Form No 1.
5. Form No 1a. (Medical Certificate)
(Not required for private license up to age of 50 years.)
7. Age Proof.
The RTO issues a duplicate driving license if the original is lost/damaged/misplaced.

The additional documents required are:
1. Original first information report (FIR). (from a police station)
2. Two passport size photographs.
An individual traveling overseas needs to get an International driving permit.
The permit entitles you to drive in most countries across the world.
The following additional documents would be required with the form:
1. Four Passport size photographs
2. Current Indian driving license
3. Passport in Original.
