GM is saying it is developing a 800cc engine for India in it’s bid to compete in the most talked about, micro car segment. They say they are developing this 800cc engine for the Chevrolet Spark which currently comes with a 1 litre unit. Their company representative has said in a statement: “Our existing Spark platform can produce a mini-car with a 0.8-litre engine. I am not closing the door to such a possibility for the Indian market. Particularly with the small car market expanding, a number of opportunities are being created inside one segment.”
Comeon GM, we all know the Chevrolet Spark is a modified Daewoo Matiz which was launched in India in the last millenium and sold in very good numbers thanks to it’s frugal 800cc engine. Internationally GM continues to sell the 800cc Daewoo Matiz (GM acquired Daewoo when the company went belly up). This is the 800cc engine which GM would be putting in the Spark with a few tweaks at best. The Matiz used to deliver 16-18kmpl with the 800cc engine and the Spark is also likely to be in that range. The 800cc Chevrolet Spark when launched would give GM the ability to take on cheaper cars like the Santro and Alto.
