Bajaj Auto has partnered with KTM Power Sports AG (www.ktm.com), Europe’s second largest sport motorcycle manufacturer to introduce their range of sports bikes in India. The KTM bikes were unveiled at the New Delhi Auto Expo 2008 followed by a press conference headed by Bajaj Auto MD Mr. Rajiv Bajaj and Mr. Stefan Pierer, CEO, KTM. The alliance with KTM would cover joint development of street bikes for both Indian and overseas markets. Bajaj also announced the increase of its stake in KTM to 20.89%, which is a part of Bajajs growth strategy for the international market and get access to KTM’s technology to compete more effectively with international players in the Indian market. Bajaj has also taken up the distribution role for KTM products for South Asia. Over the long term the two firms will jointly develop four-stroke bikes in 125cc and 250cc models, which will be branded KTM and launched in mid-2010. They may also develop a range of scooters for Europe.
KTM 990 Superduke

The KTM bikes being considered for launch in India in 2008 include the 690 Supermoto, 690 Duke, 990 Adventure, 250 EXC-F and the 990 Superduke. These bikes would be retailed through Bajajs Probiking stores in select metros. The pricing hasnt been disclosed yet but is likely to be high due to the import duty. KTM bikes are known for their race and rally winning credentials having won more than 136 World Championship titles and seven times the Rallye Paris-Dakar. Indian bike enthusiasts can use the off road abilities of KTM’s bikes to deal with broken roads, wade through flooded streets and take care of other obstacles that come their way on the mean city streets.
KTM EXC-F 250

Bajaj had another important announcement to make at the Auto Expo 2008, which was that Kawasaki bikes including the Ninja 250, Sports Roadster, Ninja ZX-6R, Z1000 and the Vulcan Cruiser will be retailed in India via the Probiking showrooms. To start with, the Ninja 250 model will be assembled at Bajaj’s Chakan facility to tackle the huge import duties that are usually levied on imported vehicles. The 250cc, 30ps bike will be imported as completely knocked down kits from Kawasaki’s Thailand plant. As a part of the agreement with Kawasaki, Bajaj will get assistance in technology and design development from Kawasaki for future products. Kawasaki will also tap into Bajaj’s extensive supplier base for sourcing components. Bajaj currently has 10 probiking showrooms across India and plans to add 10 more by March 2008.
