Ford has finally rolled out the diesel variant of the slow selling Fusion at a price of Rs.6.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The new Fusion shares it’s 1.4 litre TDCi diesel heart with the Fiesta and produces identical 68ps of power at 4000rpm and 160Nm of torque at 2000rpm. A comparison with the petrol variant which has a 100 bhp 1.6 litre DOHC engine makes the diesel Fusion seem grossly underpowered. It is also over priced costing nearly Rs. 1 lakh more than the petrol which retails at Rs. 5.7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This is despite the fact that Ford has managed to trim the diesel Fusion’s length to 3989 mm from 4018 mm by remodelling the bumpers and has a a result qualified for a small car excise rebate which it doesnt seem to be passing to the customer.
Ideally the diesel Fusion should have been priced in the Rs. 5.5-6 lakh bracket to have any chance against the diesel Swift which is not only cheaper but has a more powerful 75bhp 1.3 liter multijet engine.
Ford seems to perpetually get it’s pricing wrong with the Fusion and despite the price cuts on the petrol model it hasnt been selling because it’s still way overpriced in comparison to other hatchbacks.
Apart from the engine the diesel Fusion is identical to the petrol variant and is offered in only a single variant.
