Tata’s aging work horse the Sumo has been serving the price sensitive cab market since 1994 but is due to be replaced by Diwali 2007. The new MUV will be based on Tata’s TL Sprint pick up truck which was revealed at the Bologna Motor Show in 2006 (see picture).

The new Sumo is a big improvement from the current model and has none of the boxy Mercedes G wagen look. Instead the new Sumo gets fresh new clothes with sharper lines and curves to give it a more muscular and modern look. Infact the new Sumo can be called a looker if you compare it to the Tavera which would be it’s closest rival. The new Sumo would also get a new heart, most probably the Safari’s 3.0 litre DICOR engine adding a whole lot of appeal to the MUV. The interiors have also been spruced up and include new doorpads, instrument cluster with sporty dials and a neat centre console.
The overall dimensions would remain the same but bigger 16 inch wheels are expected. Tata would keep the Sumo’s value proposition the same targetting those who are looking at big space, reliable diesel running and excellent value for money.
p.s: An all new Sumo model is rumoured to arrive in 2009 which will be based on the next generation ladder frame chassis (code X2).
