Maruti Suzuki has launched its biggest blockbuster yet, the much awaited Swift Diesel. The Swift revolutionized Maruti’s image in India and the diesel Swift is likely to become a best seller and announce Maruti’s entry into the mainstream diesel car club. Its the first time a Maruti’s been launched with an inhouse manufactured diesel engine, the earlier diesel zen’s and esteem’s were fitted with an antiquated Peugeot engine. Maruti’s beaten Hyundai’s Getz in launching India’s first hatchback with a new age CRDi engine. Maruti claims that the Swift Diesel’s engine is the world’s smallest four cylinder diesel engine for passenger cars.
The Swift Diesel comes with an attractive introductory price tag of Rs 4.68 for the LDi and Rs. 4.96 for the VDi. The LDi has equipment levels comparable to the petrol Lxi while the VDi is similar to the Vxi and comes with ABS. Speaking of the revolutionary DDis engine (developed under licence from Fiat), it’s a 1.3 litre unit with a DOHC (double over head camshaft) and five stage fuel injection for quiet and efficient performance. The engine is also only 60 kg heavier than the petrol which means the Swift Diesel will retain it’s sporty handling and performance. Power output is at a healthy 75 BHP with 19.36 kgm of torque which gives the Swift excellent performance figures. The car will race to 100 kmph from a standstill in less than 14 seconds and hit a top whack of 160 kmph. These are real good for a 1.3 litre fuel efficient diesel engine which will give you real world mileage of 16-18 kmpl in the city.
