Yes, India might still be a developing nation and have poor roads and terrible traffic but that isnt stopping the rich to open their purse strings and buy a Porsche or two. The legendary German car maker is so pleased with its sales of 200 plus cars (each costs upwards of Rs.50 Lakh) in the last two years since it entered India that it is rolling out an expansion plan. Porsche will be opening service centres in Bangalore and Hyderabad while their centre in Mumbai should be operational early 2007. Since most of the orders for these supercars come from northern India, Porsche is considering setting up an additional service facility in Delhi and one in Punjab. Porsche currently retails its imported cars from its two showrooms in Delhi & Mumbai.
Once the service facilities are online Porsche will go all out and bring the most eagerly anticipated Porsche Panamera (see picture) simultaneously with the global launch. This supercar would cost around Rs. 1 crore and give competition to the Ferrari’s & Lamborghini’s. The way the car looks is a matter of concern because somehow it doesnt have the Porsche design in it and the nose looks rather loose, also weird are the suicide doors (rear door has hinges at the back). Porsche currently imports the ‘Boxster’, ‘Cayman’, ‘Cayenne’, ‘Carrera’ and their different variants. All these vehicles carry a price tag of over Rs 50 lakh each with some going as high as Rs.80 Lakh. The Porsche Cayenne has had the best sales in India mainly because its a very capable SUV suited to Indian road and driving conditions.
Oh yes, Porsche is also getting interested in introducing its Porsche Design line of clothing, shoes and accessories in India through exclusive brand shops, starting 2007. So now you can look good while you drive and wear a Porsche!
