Volkswagen has revealed that the first locally manufactured car from its stable will be the Polo which will rollout sometime in 2009 from its plant in Chakan, Maharashtra. The Polo is a very popular model internationally and will compete with the Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Getz, New Fiat Punto and New Indica (both expected in 2007-2008) and to be launched hatchback from Honda (which might be the Jazz). The Polo is a very well built car and lives up to Volkswagen’s reputation of making rock solid, durable cars. The car is expected with a choice of petrol & diesel mills. It is clear that the premium hatch race is only going to get hotter. Volkswagen is looking at a 80% localization content in the Polo to begin with and will also altering the cars length to benefit from the 16% excise duty on cars less than 4 metre in length.
Meanwhile as reported earlier VW will rollout the Passat which will compete with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata, Skoda Superb & to a certain extent with the Mercedes C Class. The Passat will be imported as CKD (completely knocked down) form and assembled at the Skoda plant from 2007.
